Park Lane Stables

.

Who knew Teddington had its very own horse riding school!? Park Lane Stables is quite literally a hidden gem. It’s down Park Lane, a small a residential street in Teddington just off Broad Street. Passers-by are often surprised to find a stables hidden away on a small street – it doesn’t have its own land but the horses travel into Bushy Park to enjoy group hacks, private lessons or independent riding to a stunning backdrop.

I went as a 30 something adult looking to get back into riding – I hadn’t been on a horse since my teenage years but I wanted to find an enjoyable way to keep fit and enjoy the outdoors. Horse riding was the perfect answer!

It was quiet the daunting experience entering a new riding school as an adult but the people there are welcoming and friendly. I went on a beginners adult group ride to Bushy Park – just to see how I got on! Before I knew it I was back trotting a long and re gaining my confidence.

Needless to say I absolutely loved it and have booked a block of private 1 to 1 lessons. -Sharon

Studio 148

Studio 148 came about when local art-shop owner Nita saw a gap in the market for a quality menswear shop on the high street. It aims to bring lots of bright colours in smart but casual wear to the chaps of Teddington.

The shop itself is a boutique that fits in nicely with other similar smart shops of the area – having a vintage tailor’s look with wooden floors and decorations but with open space to keep a minimal, less-crowded feel and plenty of room for the family and kids/buggies to fit in!

To accompany the old-style look is old-fashioned good customer service that includes a personal shopping service and alterations for items that need adjusting.

Studio 148 owner: Nita.

The shop is chock full of brands than you don’t see every time you visit a department store. Nita encourages lesser-known but quality brands and also gives smaller businesses a platform to sell their more unique items. For example where else in the area might you find flip-flips with a built-in bottle-opener or summer shorts that are reversible!

The smart and spacious interior packed with menswear.

Items stocked include: colourful casual and Eton tailored shirts, t-shirts, jackets, shoes, socks, jeans, trousers, belts, ties, cufflinks, bags, underwear and season items such as shorts, swimwear, gloves and scarves.

Brands that you can find in store are currently Robert Graham, Brax, Sand, Oiler and Boiler, Geox, Hudson, Eton, Henry Arlington, Duchamps, Florentino, Mac, Giordano.

Studio 148 has many regular customers that usually find out about the emporium through word of mouth and keep returning due to the personal service and more unique clothes than elsewhere.

Diners Delight

Diners Delight is a family-run, real charcoal grill and meze Turkish restaurant that oozes charm, warmth and atmosphere. Secretly tucked-away off Broad Street by the railway bridge in Teddington, there is far more than meets the eye to this surprising dining destination run by Turkish husband and wife team, JJ and Filiz.

Some might go as far as saying that Diners Delight has a split personality. But this is in the nicest possible way!

JJ and Filiz took over the reins of Diners Delight seven years ago (it has now been going a strong 22 years and counting). Then four years ago, they cleverly decided to bring the best of Turkish cuisine to Teddington by introducing their renowned Turkish Delight dining experience.

Joining in at a Belly dancing evening (every Wednesday)

By Moonlight… Diners Turkish Delight – Real Charcoal Grill & Meze Restaurant
At Diners delight, by evening you can enjoy authentic and delicious Turkish dishes including freshly cooked mezes, grills, kebabs, special dishes on charcoal grill, salads, seafood, vegetarian dishes and their speciality complimentary ‘Balloon’ and flat breads. Those who have had the joy of sampling the food of Turkey’s gorgeous Lycian coast will be taken straight back to those balmy evenings eating fresh and delicious local food. Cap this off with Raki, Turkish coffee and al fresco dining on the terrace at Diners Delight (if we’re lucky enough to get a warm British summer’s evening!), then you’re getting incredibly close to the true Turkish experience. Those in the know have been said to put Diners Delight ‘up there’ when it comes to finding the best fresh Turkish food in London.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Fried Ice Cream with Chocolate Sauce is not to be missed. The syrupy and nutty Baklava is also very popular with diners.

To add to the Turkish experience, and for something a bit different, a belly dancer impresses the diners on the first Wednesday of the month. You can even dance with the belly dancer if you like!

Thank you all for a fantastic evening yesterday! Great food and a friendly welcome as ever! Thought that man belly dancing at the end of the table was excellent!”

By Sunlight… Diners Delight Cafe
Now, the second side to Diners Delight is its daytime cafe. This is a treat of a place for your cooked breakfast, with plates that take up the whole table. You need to ask for the no. 8 set breakfast if you’re up to the challenge, the Full Monty! Breakfasts include free range eggs, homemade bubble and local butcher, A.G. Miller’s, Cumberland sausages. The all day English breakfast starts from £4.49. Delicious Fair Trade Italian Aroma coffee is served to have in our take away.

The café extends to lunchtime food too (although we’ve all had a day where a full English is all that will hit the spot, even if it is 1pm!). On the menu is spaghetti bolognaise, lamb shank, meatballs, burgers, chilli con carne, meze food, omelettes, salads, paninis, wraps plus lots more. Beer and wine can be served from 11am. This family friendly café also offers children’s dishes.

Refreshing change!” 5 of 5 stars
Wow, now that’s what I call a break from the road! Lovely bright airy café with smiley staff, great food and a chilled atmosphere! Plus they do amazing coffee too. Vastly better place to stop than those trashy services! Try it!

Did you know: Rick Parfitt of Status Quo fame has been spotted enjoying the food at Diners Delight. Also scenes from the first ever episode of the hit-comedy ‘Spaced’ staring Simon Pegg were filmed here too.

The restaurant is also available to hire for parties and private events. It can seat up to 55 people including the terrace outside.

TCS

They say eyes are the windows of the soul, and here in Teddington’s High Street, the windows of TCS show the very soul of an elegant boutique. Standing on the threshold you might be forgiven for a frisson or excitement or nerves. The mannequins are dressed with exquisite good taste, the objects which surround them are clearly chosen with great care and through the door lies a treasure trove of clothing, accessories, homeware and gifts.

Once you’re in, the elegance continues over two floors in a hushed heaven of beautiful items, from the dresses that whisper against one another on the rails to the simple/serene white china in the homeware department upstairs.

Meeting Jules, the owner of TCS for the past 17 years, I had to make a confession – being short and unable to decode the style gene – I had only been into the shop once in the six years I’d lived in Teddington.

This is the thing isn’t it?” laughs Jules “People come in and say ‘I suppose everyone has to be as tall as you to shop here’ but I cater for everyone from size 8 to 18 (and all heights) and I wouldn’t have been in business very long if I didn’t. There are more real people out there than there are “boutique petites”. I’m passionate that beautiful/flattering clothes should be available to all people. You should enjoy wearing them and they should make you feel happy. Always put something on that makes you feel good!

Jules Winstanley, founder & owner of TCS

TCS clearly makes a lot of customers very happy, and not only locals. Many of the ladies who shop at TCS have done so for years, and they love the individuality of what’s on offer in store. One customer, who used to live in Teddington, now visits whenever she is over from her new home in Manhattan because ‘she knows she can find pieces here that won’t be seen anywhere else.

TCS’s repeat customers often keep items for years and return time and time again to continue to build their wardrobes. TCS is also very much a one-stop shop, which is undoubtedly part of its appeal.

We have a combination of lots of things under one roof – customers find a whole range of items, from clothes, to shoes, jewellery and accessories all in one place – but there’s no rule that you have to spend a lot money.

“We offer not fashion, but style and we aim to help people to find their personal style, to find what’s right for them. And once people are over the threshold they find that actually we’re a friendly bunch!” says Jules.

If you were shopping at TCS for the first time and like me, often feel bamboozled in boutiques, there is no need here. Jules is keen to emphasize that she strives to make shopping here an enjoyable experience (“We never push to sell here, it’s all about making you feel comfortable and relaxed, people can stay for hours if they like and not buy anything”), and she and her team (Charlie, Nicoline and Dhara) also offer a personal styling service, for no extra charge.

The calm and light interior
.

We can do head to toe, we have the perfect shoes and great jewellery, so people can come here and get the total look or they can bring one piece from their wardrobes and we’ll help them build around it. We can show how your wardrobe can work hard for you; we sell a lot of neutrals and these work well with longevity. You don’t have to buy loads and loads of expensive pieces.

TCS does offer high-end clothes, but while we’re on the subject of debunking consumer myths, it’s worth pointing out that there are plenty of affordable items mixed in with the more expensive prices.

Yes, I like to think that every piece is an investment and customers often tell me that they’ve kept things for years because they love wearing them. I look at everything that I buy for the shop as an investment. Of course, these things are not always cheap, but we do offer cheaper ranges -there’s a whole mix of different priced collections.

Jules buys most of her items in London and Paris, from showrooms and designers she has known for years. She offers a diverse mix of designers from Tanya Sarne, who was behind Ghost, and now produces the Handwritten label, to a new Turkish designer Umit Unal which she discovered at the shows in Paris. She tries to seek out washable, easy-care items, too, so that what she offers is practical for her customers.

Upstairs at TCS – more clothing, also homeware
.

Her background, from a student in Leeds where she studied Clothing Technology and Dress Design, has always been in fashion. After studying she joined Courtaulds in Birmingham, and found her way down to London via George Davies and Next to a product development company in Brentford that supplied another 90s big hitter, BHS. She bought TCS (formerly The Clothing Store) in 1996 after working there for a month and finding that the owner was selling the business.

I thought it was a real shame that the shop could close and lose all its loyal customers. I put a business plan together and managed to buy it.

Seventeen years on, it is testament to her success that former owner Eileen still shops at the store.

Saying my goodbyes, I ask Jules if there’s anything else she’d like Teddington to know about TCS. Stopping in the homeware department she began in 2010 she remembers:
Yes! We offer a Wedding List service… people have all the practical stuff these days, but if you want something unusual and beautiful you can find it here on your doorstep!

It sums up rather well what TCS is all about. It’s local and friendly, unique, different and beautiful, all at the same time.

We are always discovering new things and at our flagship store in Teddington we showcase a vast range of toys that conjure up memories of happy childhoods. We strive to offer toys that are different from those in the big stores, with many from small and often quirky manufacturers.

Teddington Hardware

The shop of every DIY-enthusiast’s dreams, Teddington Hardware is owned by Sylvia Wallis who runs the store with her daughter Nikki, along with a very friendly and efficient team who will be able to help with the most unusual of DIY dilemmas.

Venture inside and you’ll be amazed at the choice on offer. From picture wire to paint brushes, light bulbs to locks and candles to cleaning products, this Aladin’s cave is stocked to the rafters and has everything you could need for that essential job. (No excuse to put it off now!)

One of the things most customers start by saying when they visit Teddington Hardware is “I know you probably won’t have it, but…” However, it is safe to say that they usually do. And on the off-chance that they don’t have exactly what you need, it’s never too much trouble to order it.

What makes Teddington Hardware a real GEM is that the warm and friendly staff never make you feel silly for asking the most ridiculous of questions. One customer says: “Lots of places could learn a great deal about good customer service by visiting this shop. The staff are so helpful and friendly, prices are very reasonable and we are lucky to have such a good shop in Teddington.

You see this little thing that goes there…” is often all you need to say to these knowledgeable experts for them to know exactly what you need. Before you’ve even finished trying to describe it, they’ve often darted off to a corner of the shop to find it for you.

One of the other great things about Teddington Hardware is that you can buy just one single bolt if that is all you need – you don’t have to buy a big pack.

Peter Lynn, of Bushy Park Gardens, Teddington, a regular customer since 1986, says “You go to these great big DIY stores and they’ve never quite got what you want. Or you have to buy in big packets. Here, you can buy 1, 2 or 3 of something. The sheer range of products here is excellent! The tried and trusted products bought here years ago, can still be found here today.

Did you know: Teddington Hardware can mix over 8,000 different shades of paint in the shop!

Astrora Coffee sells premium quality coffee freshly roasted within the shop. They also stock a variety of coffee making equipment and spare parts for use at home and in the office, as well as a selection of teas, chocolates, honey and jams. They hand roast green Arabica coffees from selected farms in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia.

Single-origin coffees are stocked from countries including Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Peru and Rwanda, and two popular blends from Brazil, including a decaf.

Astrora Coffee is an independent new business. The company (Astrora Limited) was established in April 2008. It offers a unique service to the Teddington community and surrounding areas so local residents can enjoy the distinct flavours of single-origin, freshly roasted coffees at home. The guiding principle of the business is to provide a special selection of the best coffee beans available, roasted in the shop to the highest standard.

If you are lucky, you might arrive in the shop while coffee is being roasted. It will be a unique and interesting experience to observe green coffee beans turning in the drum of the classic machine, changing to yellow, then cinnamon and finally the beautiful brown roasted coffee being dumped into the cooler giving out complex and delightful aroma.
