How far can your Totally Locally Bag travel?

The gauntlet has been thrown down – how far can your Totally Locally bag travel? We have received photos of TL bags as far afield as Dubai and Mauritius!

If your bag has travelled outside of Teddington, drop us a photo via , or and we will add them to our map found here.

One of the TLT team recently met up with one of the Totally Locally founders and all-round nice guy Chris Sands for a tour of one of the first Totally Locally towns – the lovely Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire. What a vibrant and busy town! Locals have fought off several attempts to open large supermarkets in the centre and the town is awash with interesting and varied independent businesses. Many shops have Totally Locally posters in the windows and some proudly display Totally Locally awards as voted by residents and even maps showing the origin of local produce in pubs!

Chris got a bag jammed with Teddington delicacies such as Teddington Honey, some well-received Teddington Cheese, a Teddington Teddy and more!

To our surprise, a greetings card trade magazine featured an article about our bags – thanks for the nice words Card Collection and ‘Greetings’!

If you haven’t already picked one up, they are for sale at Heirloom, Card Collection, Simply Skin and Happy Potter. You can also get one for free at Mela Mela if you spend over £100.

Proceeds from the bags are split between retailers and Totally Locally Teddington – so your £££ can help fund the campaign and keep our town strong and vibrant.

Bags, bags and more bags. Also news!

From Monday 8th September, our sturdy, re-usable Totally Locally Teddington bags will go on sale at Heirloom, Card Collection, Simply Skin and Happy Potter for £5 each.

On Sunday 7th September we will have a stand at the prestigious Dog Olympics at Udney Hall Gardens (next to the Landmark) from 12-4pm. Here you can nominate a Hidden Gem for a chance to win some fab prizes (live draw), also if you’re bringing your dog along, take a photo of the pup in our photo frame and tweet or email the photo to and the owner of the cutest photo will also win a prize!

At our stand, you can be the first to own the fabulous bags as well as having your own lovely Rachel Morris artwork, they’re strong and big enough to hold more than a standard plastic carrier bag’s worth of shopping, recycling etc and help reduce the impact on the environment! Funds from sales will go towards each retailer and help support the Totally Locally campaign here in Teddington.

Next to us on Sunday will be representatives from the Say No To Sainsbury’s Campaign – many locals aren’t aware that an appeal by Sainsbury’s overturned the Council’s rejection of their plans and the team are happy to chat to locals about the reasons for their objection and add petition signatures to help their campaign.

Whether you have a dog or not, it’s a great day out so pop along and help Vet4Life raise money for local animal charities. Stop by and say hi!

Coming up next will be another of our popular FiverFests in mid-October leading up to some ghoulish goings-on for Halloween.

Sainsbury’s – the fight goes on

Did You Know… that campaign to fight Sainsbury’s moving into Teddington High Street is still on-going?
.

Despite Richmond Council unanimously rejecting the proposals that would see a high-volume small supermarket move into the Calligaris site near the Landmark Arts Centre, Sainsbury’s appealed the decision and won. In a quite farcical turn of events, the planning Inspector brought in to review the case ironically had quite an issue parking near the site to inspect it and took a long time to be able to cross the busy road! Traffic issues are one of the main concerns in this area as they are a problem even without the additional strain of a supermarket. The inspector also noted that plans for the proposed loading bay on the main road were only a car-wide, not lorry-wide.
.

Traffic studies and comparisons with a Twickenham local supermarket were deemed unusuable in the appeal and the clause forbidding A1 food & drink selling on the plot was brushed aside in the decision which shocked campaigners and LBRUT. Richmond Council are being urged by campaigners to voice their disappointment over the ruling in strong terms and add their support to the campaign.
.

.

Local residents opposed to the plans have been advised there is a chance that the decision could be overturned on legal grounds in court and are again funding the campaign and legal costs out of their own pockets. As well as affecting trade in local independent traders, adding to traffic & safety woes and the general effect a long-hours supermarket would have in the conservation zone most simply don’t want yet another supermarket in our small town. Having a good balance of chains and indies is key to a strong high street but many feel we have enough supermarkets – chains are starting to creep in to Teddington and we have to be careful they don’t take over and raise rents for existing traders!
.

Without such a good mix of useful chains and fabulous independents, Teddington wouldn’t have made it to the Telegraph top ten best high streets list. Mary Portas recently referenced the Sainsbury’s fight in Teddington in an article about the onward march of Supermarkets and how the new battle ground is back on high streets – larger out-of-town units are seeing sluggish growth and even decline as shoppers do more frequent and smaller ‘en-route’ and ‘top-up’ shops nearer home. The big four are now installing Express and Local supermarkets back where our gaze is more intensely focused again – on our high streets. Sainsbury’s are also planning to move a Local store into the newly rebuild building at 210 Kingston Road with a 20 year lease if plans to fight them there fail.
.

Sainsbury’s have always said they would never open a store where it’s not wanted – look at the list of who is objecting, does it look like the majority of Teddington want’s it!
