Totally Locally Teddington is not an official body. We are a group of people just trying to do nice things for our town. So we can’t guarantee these offers and they are only while stocks last. Terms & conditions apply to all offers from individual shops, but to be honest, if there was a problem, have a word with the friendly shopkeepers and they will sort you out with something great. Because that’s what this is all about. Thank you.. The Totally Locally Team.

Totally Locally at Teddington Village Fair

The weather might not have started on a great note but we had a fab time at Teddington Village Fair spreading the Totally Locally word!

There was lots of interest from businesses and residents alike and we even had some councillors and our Deputy Mayor on-board & asking for material by the end of the day.

More piccies if the Fair and our stall here.

A smattering of prizes and vouchers from indies prompted 83 of you lovely people to make a Hidden Gem nomination (all listed on the nominations page), delivered into the waiting mouth of our nom nom nomination box. Drawn from nominations, winners of the prizes kindly donated by local businesses will be notified by email soon.

The kind words and reasons for nominations are a great list that reminds us of why we should use independents more.

We [heart] word-clouds almost as much as the hidden gem feedback so here are the most frequently-used words from nominations and as you can see, we don’t seem to cherish independents because of low prices, opening hours or stock, it’s because we like how friendly the staff are, how special and personal the service is and how ‘different’ they are. Vive la différence indeed! Let’s not have our high street become a ‘clone town’ over-run with the same chains you find everywhere – a good mixture is best!

Like a witch’s gingerbread cottage, the traditional toy shop wendy house lured the kids inside whilst we pounced on the parents! It’s truly inspiring to get so much great feedback from locals that show how much passion there is for our town and the independent businesses that make it so unique.

One common question we were asked was “what can I do to help?” Using independents as a first point of call where feasible and convenient is the most important way. Helping spread the word about Totally Locally would help loads too! Keep an eye out for posters about promotions or Totally Locally things happening and read the info on the posters – it’s all about teaching people how to shop again.

Huge thanks to the following for prizes and/or props for the day [deep breath]: Al Borgo, Astrora Coffee, Dead Parrots Society, Fun Factory, Happy Potter, Heirloom, Jenny Blanc Interiors, Kitchen Sync, La Casa Del Habano, Liz Goodchild, Mercado, Play Inside Out, TCS, The Loft, Via, Your Local Plumbing Company.

Also thanks to our friends Teddnet and Diner’s Delight for supplying refreshing Pimms and Mezes!

Are food shopping habits changing?

As the horsemeat scandal is still making headlines, consumers are increasingly questioning the lack of quality control in the pre-packaged food industry. Whilst reading this might make some choke on their lunch, it may be a blessing in disguise for the more traditional suppliers of food.

A Which? consumer poll has revealed that 30% of shoppers are buying less processed meat, 24% buying fewer ready meals and overall 60% had changed their shopping habits since before the horsemeat scandal.

Trust in large supermarket and processed food has clearly been eroded and this goes to show how easily it can be abused by large supply chains and companies – the more of your food is prepared behind closed doors, the less you know about what ingredients are involved and quite frankly the less beneficial it will be for your health.

Here at Totally Locally we of course encourage the purchasing of fresh, local produce as much as possible so your meals will be tastier, healthier and with the added bonus of supporting local independent businesses!

In recent weeks Teddington’s butchers AG Millers has seen a noted increase in new faces at their shop on Waldegrave Road – this is great! They know this because unlike most supermarkets, they know and interact with their customers, chat to them about the weather, share a joke or two and ask what meal they might be making with the goods they are purchasing & offer further advice.

AG Millers doesn’t sell just meat, also on offer are [deep breath].. freshly cooked baguettes, organic eggs, fish cakes and pies, freshly prepared sandwiches, cooked pies & sausage rolls, locally produced ‘Teddington honey’, shelves stocked full of items to help cook and accompany their delicious meats – mint sauce, gravy, ketchups, oils, pasta and flavoured mayonnaises. All their selection of burgers, sausages, pasties and pies do not contain any mechanically recovered meat and are made on the premises.

What are our favourite AG Miller sausages I hear you ask? Well they are lamb, mint & apricot and the more traditional pork, honey & mustard. Their lamb steaks have to be tasted to be believed and their bacon is proper thick, tasty smoked or unsmoked with no hint of added water that helps shrink pre-packaged bacon during cooking.

Interestingly some Teddington residents lament the lack of a butchers without realising that there is one! Others are not keen to visit because they consider it too far from the high street. We have timed the walk and it’s 7 minutes if you don’t stop for too long to admire Noel Cowards blue plaque, marking the house he was born in!

Fiver Fest Fortnight 2nd-16th Feb 2013

February, the month of LOVE. Residents of Teddington will soon be feeling the love with the amazing FIVER FEST FORTNIGHT offers from our independents.

For two weeks, Saturday 2nd to the 16th of February, the town will be awash with various independent retailers and eateries offering locals great deals on selected products, meals or services for an absolutely cracking price of £5 each!

Unbeatable offers like these are the perfect excuse (not that we need one) to visit the shop you may have always passed, eat in a cafe or restaurant you have never tried and start celebrating all great independents we are fortunate to have in Teddington.

Shopping locally has never been easier or more fun. It’s also the ideal opportunity for a face to face chat with one of the wonderful traders who keep our town centre vibrant and to re-evaluate old shopping habits. Look out for the FIVER FEST posters which will start appearing in shop windows and check back here for the complete list of participating retailers with their offers.

Show how much you LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE and shop Totally Locally Teddington.

Local Christmas Shopping

No doubt some people will be sat at home smugly with all of their Christmas presents already bought but also no doubt there will be others part way through their list or some who haven’t even started yet [ahem, maybe us].

Of course you won’t be able to buy some items from your lists in Teddington or from independents, but there are plenty of great local shops full to the brim with Christmas stock that deserve a good rummaging through.

The famous ‘snowing’ Christmas tree at Divine Hair & Beauty

Our lovely boutiques are full of shiny presents: Mitzi-B, Hierloom, Shambles new pop-up hamper shop, La Casa Del Habano (no they don’t just sell tobacco!), Studio 148, TCS, Moonstone, Paul Kay Jewellers and Boho Boutique. Florists Zeldaland and Jo Butler flowers also have Christmas wreaths to adorn your door or dining room table. Many local hair and beauty salons have gift vouchers available so why not treat someone you love to a bit of pampering!

Don’t forget there are also many local shops selling a large range of Christmas Cards and wrapping paper – from charity shops, to The Loft, , Urban Suburban, Kitchen Sync, Teddington Essentials and of course the Card Collection.

Many local businesses usually report a mad rush of people just before Christmas that can’t find the presents they are looking for in nearby towns or London so only then do they resort to looking locally! Why not save yourself the driving, parking, cost and crowds by trying here first?

PS it’s not too late to order your Christmas cheese from Teddington Cheese (last order date is Monday 17th December) or your organic of free-range Christmas Turkey from our butches AG Miller (last day Saturday 15th).

What are your local Christmas shopping tips?

The Guardian’s local shopping map

The Guardian have launched an interactive local shopping map to help people discover and share the best places to shop, eat and drink in their area. Plans were already in the making to create our own version of this but for now we can all submit items to the Guardian one!

Excerpt from the article:
We keep hearing about the death of the high street and the growth of chain-shop Britain. But there are still thousands of brilliant independent shops out there – and we want your help to find them.

Today the Guardian launches an open community project looking for the best retailers across the UK and beyond. We have built a comprehensive interactive map to promote fantastic local retailers, market stalls, restaurants, cafes, booksellers and all the shops that enhance your local community.

It’s easy to get involved, and you do it using Twitter, Instagram, or n0tice – our new online community platform. As long as you have turned ‘location on’ and tagged your reports with #localshopping, the images and stories will be pinned to a live map of shops across the UK and beyond.

So we would LOVE for the nice residents and visitors of Teddington to submit info about their favourite local shops. This is very simple, all you need to do is:

1. Turn your location on so they know where to pin your post.
2. Take a picture (whilst in or next to the shop itself) and write your tip or what you love about that shop.
3. Tweet, Instagram or n0tice it with #LocalShopping hashtag.

Simple! Let’s get Teddington on that map!
