Park Lane Stables

Who knew Teddington had its very own horse riding school!? Park Lane Stables is quite literally a hidden gem. It’s down Park Lane, a small a residential street in Teddington just off Broad Street. Passers-by are often surprised to find a stables hidden away on a small street – it doesn’t have its own land but the horses travel into Bushy Park to enjoy group hacks, private lessons or independent riding to a stunning backdrop.

I went as a 30 something adult looking to get back into riding – I hadn’t been on a horse since my teenage years but I wanted to find an enjoyable way to keep fit and enjoy the outdoors. Horse riding was the perfect answer!

It was quiet the daunting experience entering a new riding school as an adult but the people there are welcoming and friendly. I went on a beginners adult group ride to Bushy Park – just to see how I got on! Before I knew it I was back trotting a long and re gaining my confidence.

Needless to say I absolutely loved it and have booked a block of private 1 to 1 lessons. -Sharon

Riding in Bushy Park.

Park Lane Stables has one of the largest Pony Club memberships in the country! Members can learn about horses and pony care from an early age as well as improving their riding, all whilst working towards a variety of badges and achievements.

PLS has a full range of safety equipment and qualified instructors available.

As well as hacks in Bushy Park, there are pub and river rides, birthday parties at the stables or even by pony visit at your house!

If you’re experience, a beginner or looking to get back in the saddle, PLS can tailor lessons and hacks to your individual needs. The stables team really do make Park Lane the friendliest stables in London.

All levels of experience catered for. Photos: Max Ellis

Did you know…. the stables has existed on this spot since the 1830’s when the building was a fire station with a horse-drawn fire engine!

Studio 148

Studio 148 came about when local art-shop owner Nita saw a gap in the market for a quality menswear shop on the high street. It aims to bring lots of bright colours in smart but casual wear to the chaps of Teddington.

The shop itself is a boutique that fits in nicely with other similar smart shops of the area – having a vintage tailor’s look with wooden floors and decorations but with open space to keep a minimal, less-crowded feel and plenty of room for the family and kids/buggies to fit in!

To accompany the old-style look is old-fashioned good customer service that includes a personal shopping service and alterations for items that need adjusting.

Studio 148 owner: Nita.

The shop is chock full of brands than you don’t see every time you visit a department store. Nita encourages lesser-known but quality brands and also gives smaller businesses a platform to sell their more unique items. For example where else in the area might you find flip-flips with a built-in bottle-opener or summer shorts that are reversible!

The smart and spacious interior packed with menswear.

Items stocked include: colourful casual and Eton tailored shirts, t-shirts, jackets, shoes, socks, jeans, trousers, belts, ties, cufflinks, bags, underwear and season items such as shorts, swimwear, gloves and scarves.

Brands that you can find in store are currently Robert Graham, Brax, Sand, Oiler and Boiler, Geox, Hudson, Eton, Henry Arlington, Duchamps, Florentino, Mac, Giordano.

Studio 148 has many regular customers that usually find out about the emporium through word of mouth and keep returning due to the personal service and more unique clothes than elsewhere.

Diners Delight

Diners Delight is a family-run, real charcoal grill and meze Turkish restaurant that oozes charm, warmth and atmosphere. Secretly tucked-away off Broad Street by the railway bridge in Teddington, there is far more than meets the eye to this surprising dining destination run by Turkish husband and wife team, JJ and Filiz.

Some might go as far as saying that Diners Delight has a split personality. But this is in the nicest possible way!

JJ and Filiz took over the reins of Diners Delight seven years ago (it has now been going a strong 22 years and counting). Then four years ago, they cleverly decided to bring the best of Turkish cuisine to Teddington by introducing their renowned Turkish Delight dining experience.

Joining in at a Belly dancing evening (every Wednesday)

By Moonlight… Diners Turkish Delight – Real Charcoal Grill & Meze Restaurant
At Diners delight, by evening you can enjoy authentic and delicious Turkish dishes including freshly cooked mezes, grills, kebabs, special dishes on charcoal grill, salads, seafood, vegetarian dishes and their speciality complimentary ‘Balloon’ and flat breads. Those who have had the joy of sampling the food of Turkey’s gorgeous Lycian coast will be taken straight back to those balmy evenings eating fresh and delicious local food. Cap this off with Raki, Turkish coffee and al fresco dining on the terrace at Diners Delight (if we’re lucky enough to get a warm British summer’s evening!), then you’re getting incredibly close to the true Turkish experience. Those in the know have been said to put Diners Delight ‘up there’ when it comes to finding the best fresh Turkish food in London.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Fried Ice Cream with Chocolate Sauce is not to be missed. The syrupy and nutty Baklava is also very popular with diners.

To add to the Turkish experience, and for something a bit different, a belly dancer impresses the diners on the first Wednesday of the month. You can even dance with the belly dancer if you like!

Thank you all for a fantastic evening yesterday! Great food and a friendly welcome as ever! Thought that man belly dancing at the end of the table was excellent!”

The Diner’s Delight team!

By Sunlight… Diners Delight Cafe
Now, the second side to Diners Delight is its daytime cafe. This is a treat of a place for your cooked breakfast, with plates that take up the whole table. You need to ask for the no. 8 set breakfast if you’re up to the challenge, the Full Monty! Breakfasts include free range eggs, homemade bubble and local butcher, A.G. Miller’s, Cumberland sausages. The all day English breakfast starts from £4.49. Delicious Fair Trade Italian Aroma coffee is served to have in our take away.

The café extends to lunchtime food too (although we’ve all had a day where a full English is all that will hit the spot, even if it is 1pm!). On the menu is spaghetti bolognaise, lamb shank, meatballs, burgers, chilli con carne, meze food, omelettes, salads, paninis, wraps plus lots more. Beer and wine can be served from 11am. This family friendly café also offers children’s dishes.

Refreshing change!” 5 of 5 stars
Wow, now that’s what I call a break from the road! Lovely bright airy café with smiley staff, great food and a chilled atmosphere! Plus they do amazing coffee too. Vastly better place to stop than those trashy services! Try it!

Did you know: Rick Parfitt of Status Quo fame has been spotted enjoying the food at Diners Delight. Also scenes from the first ever episode of the hit-comedy ‘Spaced’ staring Simon Pegg were filmed here too.

The restaurant is also available to hire for parties and private events. It can seat up to 55 people including the terrace outside.

So we can’t guarantee these offers and they are only while stocks last. Terms & conditions apply to all offers from individual shops, but to be honest, if there was a problem, have a word with the friendly shopkeepers and they will sort you out with something great. Because that’s what this is all about. Are food shopping habits changing?

As the horsemeat scandal is still making headlines, consumers are increasingly questioning the lack of quality control in the pre-packaged food industry. Whilst reading this might make some choke on their lunch, it may be a blessing in disguise for the more traditional suppliers of food.

A Which? consumer poll has revealed that 30% of shoppers are buying less processed meat, 24% buying fewer ready meals and overall 60% had changed their shopping habits since before the horsemeat scandal.

Trust in large supermarket and processed food has clearly been eroded and this goes to show how easily it can be abused by large supply chains and companies – the more of your food is prepared behind closed doors, the less you know about what ingredients are involved and quite frankly the less beneficial it will be for your health.

Here at Totally Locally we of course encourage the purchasing of fresh, local produce as much as possible so your meals will be tastier, healthier and with the added bonus of supporting local independent businesses!

In recent weeks Teddington’s butchers AG Millers has seen a noted increase in new faces at their shop on Waldegrave Road – this is great! They know this because unlike most supermarkets, they know and interact with their customers, chat to them about the weather, share a joke or two and ask what meal they might be making with the goods they are purchasing & offer further advice.

AG Millers doesn’t sell just meat, also on offer are [deep breath].. freshly cooked baguettes, organic eggs, fish cakes and pies, freshly prepared sandwiches, cooked pies & sausage rolls, locally produced ‘Teddington honey’, shelves stocked full of items to help cook and accompany their delicious meats – mint sauce, gravy, ketchups, oils, pasta and flavoured mayonnaises. All their selection of burgers, sausages, pasties and pies do not contain any mechanically recovered meat and are made on the premises.

What are our favourite AG Miller sausages I hear you ask? Well they are lamb, mint & apricot and the more traditional pork, honey & mustard. Their lamb steaks have to be tasted to be believed and their bacon is proper thick, tasty smoked or unsmoked with no hint of added water that helps shrink pre-packaged bacon during cooking.

Interestingly some Teddington residents lament the lack of a butchers without realising that there is one! Others are not keen to visit because they consider it too far from the high street. We have timed the walk and it’s 7 minutes if you don’t stop for too long to admire Noel Cowards blue plaque, marking the house he was born in!

Play Inside Out

With a dizzying number of toys on offer including adorable baby toys, educational games, science for kids, arts and craft activities, soft toys, outdoor play equipment, constructional toys, kid’s clothing, pocket money toys and much more, Play Inside Out is a treasure trove for little people – and big ones looking for new and original gifts!

Little customers can enjoy the play areas, so it’s a shop you know children will enjoy visiting. The Wow vehicle play table and kids-size table set up for a make-believe tea parties, also gives parents a moment to focus on choosing their purchases while the children have fun playing.

Nicola Cooper, owner, Play Inside Out

Owner, Nicola and her staff pride themselves on going the extra mile. They listen to what their customers want (and how much they want to spend) and make careful selections sourcing toys at the trade fairs based on this. As a result, they are able to offer a range of inspiring, good quality toys at reasonable prices, for every age group and occasion. If they don’t stock a product, they will try to source it. If you buy a present and the gift paper, they will even wrap it for you. You may now not be surprised to learn how many brands of locally-based producers they support. Companies such as Le Toy Van, Traditional Memory Nostalgia and Bob & Blossom.

Play Inside Out has evolved to compete with the online traders and operates as a “Brick ‘n Click” retailer. This gives customers both face-to-face expertise and service as well as the convenience of ordering online. However, unlike online-only traders, Play Inside Out really do go the extra mile offering free home delivery or in-store collection and even free assembly of larger items. You can now forget battling with the manual and construction of the toy kitchen or garage the night before a birthday or on Christmas eve.

Enjoying the play area: loyal Play Inside Out fan Zach from Teddington

When gifting your friends’ new babies, you can follow in the footsteps of trendy mums Jools Oliver, Gwen Stefani and Mad Men star January Jones, with the super soft range of Aden + Anais swaddles, bibs and blankets. Those distinctive star printed muslins will attract knowing glances from other ‘mums in the know’! Sophie Le Giraffe is also a classic gift every new mum will appreciate for her little tot.

For the design conscious parents who aspire for their children’s play area at home to resemble a Scandinavian wooden toy shop, they will not be disappointed by the vast range of beautiful wooden toys from Le Toy Van, John Crane and Vilac.

Fun jim jams, dressing gowns and tops

Owner Nicola says: “12 years on and we are still learning through play with as much passion and enthusiasm as the children and our customers! We are always discovering new things and at our flagship store in Teddington we showcase a vast range of toys that conjure up memories of happy childhoods. We strive to offer toys that are different from those in the big stores, with many from small and often quirky manufacturers.

Ben A, a Teddington dad says: “I enjoy shopping in Play Inside Out because they specialise in quality toys which aid learning and development, and you get a real feeling that they are made to last. Whenever I’m stumped for gift ideas, the staff here are always very helpful.

The sweet and cake creations are well-known around town – including the classic Victoria Sponge, the indulgent double-baked Chocolate, delicious Red Velvet and popular Blueberry. Believe it or not, all are made personally by Roberto (the man of many ovens), using fresh ingredients including over 350 free range eggs per week from a chicken keeper here right in Teddington!

Recipes for the desserts and cakes are always being refined so feedback what you think and you will play a part in making it taste even better next time.

La Bottega also caters for lunches, parties and gourmet food evenings on site or in your own home.

An early prototype of Roberto’s famous Blueberry cake. Mmmm Blueberry.

Concentrate, here comes the science. We find out how the chocolate cake is baked to remain soft in the middle but crisp on the outside. Shhh it’s a secret.

Sainsbury’s Local mooted for High Street

Occasionally we hear about supermarkets trying to move into Teddington – Waitrose have been looking for somewhere for quite some time but couldn’t find anywhere big enough with adequate parking. There have been rumours about Sainsbury’s trying too and now plans have been submitted to Richmond Council.

The building on the corner of Langham Road and High Street (near The Landmark Arts Centre) does seem to have a high-turnover of different businesses and we thought that high-end furniture store Calligaris might have found a long-term home there but apparently not :/

The plans can be found online here and objections have already been made. If you wish to lodge an objection, remember to stick to Richmond Council’s guidelines on how make a valid objection to plans.

The A1 (shop) license that the building was granted on the basis that food could not be sold there. Why does Sainsbury’s think this can be changed? We don’t know! But’s obvious that the Council originally thought that other nearby local food-selling businesses need to be protected so we think this should still apply.

A 7am-11pm daily opening time is likely (11pm currently served by franchise Budgens 500m away) and Marks & Spencer is only 250m away – it’s not clear then what the need for another supermarket in town the size of Teddington would be. Plans are indicating that most would walk or cycle here so shoppers could just as easily shop at M&S.

We believe that aside from a slightly shorter walk for some, the town wouldn’t really benefit from this additional supermarket chain and it would be more detrimental to existing, independent businesses who already suffer from this type of competition. Due to it’s small size and parking provision, it’s not likely that it would bring many additional shoppers to the area. Even the name “Sainsbury’s Local” is somewhat misleading! This might be geographically local but certainly not in nature.

If you wish to object, use one of more of these reasons:
Visual amenity, adequacy of parking/loading/turning, road safety, highway safety, traffic generation, noise/disturbance, design/appearance of building (especially when put into context of our lovely almshouses opposite), previous planning decisions.

Don’t make it about:
House prices, changes to a view, the impact of construction work, personal or moral views. Also the Council mentions not making it about ‘competition between firms’ which is a tricky one – really that might be our strongest point, so although it might be in the forefront of your minds, mention the legitimate reasons as your main ones!

Kirsten Brown, we salute you! One of the many objections already made against the plans:

Teddington was shown in all its glory last week at the Teddington Lights Up – supported by local small business owners and shop keepers. It has a valuable village charm which locals are striving to keep.

To add another supermarket to our locality would be completely superfluous to requirement. There are numerous cafes and food outlets along the High Street and their livelihoods and businesses would all be at jeopardy if another large organisation were to move in.”

The main plans had to be re-submitted due to an error with the address given so there is more time to object (until 20th March 2013). The separate alcohol license (7am-11pm) submitted is also receiving strong objections from residents, groups and also the Teddington Police team who fear a return to problems in nearby Udney Hall Gardens.

For more info, check out this group that has been setup to fight the plans.

The Richmond and Twickenham Times will be taking photos of those protesting the proposed store at 9am on Monday 25th March 2013 at the Calligaris site so if anyone agrees with the objection and is free, please join the crowd for the picture! Leo King has also created some fab placards (above) for some to use.

The licensing hearing on 11th April 2013 ended up with Richmond Council granting the license with 14 stipulations including slightly shortened alcohol-selling hours (8am-10pm) – a move that lead the local police team to drop their objection. There is a chance to appeal this decision and the case for the planning proposals will be held separately.
